Coconut planter liners are great–for the first year you have them. Maybe you can even stretch their use to two years. But when your liner is looking like mine was, it needs to be replaced! Finding a coconut planter liner replacement, however, can be a headache.
I’ve been frustrated with trying to find the correct size replacement. And then if I find the right size, often the cost is too high, especially when I have several coconut liners to replace.
And then I discovered the perfect solution that is nice looking in a different way: weed barrier fabric! This fabric isn’t too stiff and easily supports the weight of the dirt in a planter. And the black color looks sharp with plants.
How to Make a Weed Fabric Planter Liner
If you haven’t bought weed barrier fabric before, it comes in a three-foot-long roll and is easy to cut to the size you need.
Simply place the fabric over the top of your planter to measure, and cut a piece several inches larger than the planter.
Next, you’ll work with the fabric to tuck it into the planter. Yes, it will look messy at first, like you’ll never get it to fit properly. Just keep working to fold the fabric inside the planter.
Then, the next great hack for a shallow planter: insert a diaper in the bottom to help the soil retain moisture.
Now, even though your liner is still a mess, start adding soil. The weight of the dirt will help you get that liner all tucked in.
Use folds to shape the fabric. Keep adding dirt and adjusting the fabric.
Now with the planter half full of dirt, it’s looking much better already!
Finished product! My coconut planter liner replacement is in my planter and ready to go.
Below is another planter I used to line with a coconut liner but now have replaced with weed barrier fabric. Given the ease and ability to reuse the liner each year, I’ll never go back to coconut.
I hung up my planter, and it’s ready to go–for years!
